Jaroslaw ("Jerry") Iwanus / Ярослав Іванус
Originally from Winnipeg, Manitoba, and, after 40 years in Alberta, Jaroslaw (“Jerry”) Iwanus, a.k.a. “The Prairie Maritimer,” is an essayist and author who writes on various topics, including Ukraine and Ukrainians in Canada, life in the “last quarter,” and public policy in his adopted home of New Brunswick, Canada.
His work has been published on Medium and YourTango, in the Telegraph-Journal, the Northumberland Free Press, and on this website, which serves as his portfolio. He also has some academic work to his credit.
Considered an expert on property assessment and taxation in New Brunswick, Jerry has written widely on this topic, including a 2024 book, TAXING NEW BRUNSWICK: An Insider’s Guide to Successfully Challenging Your NB Property Assessment.
Jerry has a BA (Special) in history and an MA in Ukrainian history, both from the University of Alberta, and has served as a lecturer on Ukraine in the GNB Mosaïk program and other public forums.
He has also served as Mayor of the Village of Bawlf, AB, as a public member of the University of Alberta Senate, and on numerous other boards and committees.
He can speak, read, and write in English, Ukrainian, and some French.
