I’m not going to get too deep in the weeds on this but I need to say it.
As we prepare to commemorate the 33rd anniversary of Ukraine’s independence from the Soviet Union on Saturday the 24th, it hurts so deeply to ask the question of whether we will be certain of celebrating this day in the years to come.
Ukraine has shown itself to be a masterful warrior nation in the face of naked Russian imperialist and genocidal aggression and it would not have gotten this far without the help of countries such as the US, Germany, and Great Britain. Yet I fear that the worst thing those particular countries might have done is given Ukraine just enough financial aid and firepower to stay in it but not to win it.
Not allowing Ukraine to (among other things) take out Russian bases deep in their territory from which the Russians send drones and missiles daily to kill Ukrainian civilians has created the worst possible thing you can give people: false hope.
This fundamentally stupid fear of “escalation” with Russia is nothing but cowardice and a misreading of Russia’s capabilities and willingness to go past a certain point. Yes, America, Britain, and Germany – your leaders are nothing but abject cowards with nary a whiff of strategic thinking in their calculus.
I understand that you don’t want to get your own warriors directly involved in the conflict but that is exactly what will happen when your timidity emboldens Russia to do far more than try to subjugate just Ukraine. Right now, Ukraine is fighting on your behalf as much as it is its own, yet you deny it the very thing that could bring this war to a swifter end and save more of its people from dying under Russian bombardment.
Cowardice and appeasement, which your leadership in these three nations personify in spades, never lead to a result that ends well for anyone. Mark my words that you’ll eventually regret this and that history will judge you accordingly.
